NI launches cognitive screening tool for GPs

Added on 3rd of July 2012

Newcastle Innovation has launched its first online medical tool with the Audio Recorded Cognitive Screen (ARCS) now commercially available via its website.

The ARCS is a simple and robust screening tool for the detection of cognitive impairment or dementia, such as Alzheimer's Disease in older people, or conditions such as multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia or traumatic brain injury in younger people.

ARCS is based on research conducted at the University of Newcastle, Australia, which confirmed that the tool is valid and reliable, has a sound normative base, and measures functioning in multiple cognitive domains while imposing minimal time demands on clinicians.

The ease of use and low cost makes the ARCS a valuable tool for General Practitioners and Specialists to screen for cognitive impairment across the entire adult range.

Key benefits include:

  • Validated, robust and portable
  • Ease of use
  • Can be administered by a GP, assistant or nurse with minimal patient supervision
  • Requires no expensive equipment
  • Low cost to purchase ($110 AUD per year for unlimited use)
